Scams To Watch Out For This Tax Season

Approaching 2019 means tax time is closer than you think, many people start to discuss their tax situations once January hits. Some people have financial advisors while some do not. Tax strategy and tax planning as well as preparing is a very frequent plus critical issue with many businesses and individuals.

It is quite critical because a failure in tax planning can cause problems in your saving efforts and can also delay your retirement process. However, with proper planning and research, you can avoid some scams when tax season is in full swing. Here we will be reading about current scams that you should be aware of and how you can avoid them.

  • Tax return or your account is restricted or locked

This is the first kind of scam that you can come across which is that you will receive an email from the IRS which will state that your tax return is restricted. You can even get an email which mentions that your account is locked. Whatever email you get out of the two, a simple solution for you would be to convince them to click on a link which would then require to submit the application containing personal information so that the tax return or the account is unlocked.

  • Update the tax filing information and other details

The second kind of email consisting of the scam will be the requirement for the recipient to update the tax filing information or else their return on tax. However, you need to be careful that some of the emails can take to you a fake site when you will click on the wrong link. If in any case you click on the wrong link, all your personal information can be at stake and go to hackers or cybercriminals. However, you can hope to be lucky because in some cases it happens sometimes that HTML attachment can also take the place of the link.

  • The tax amount can be deducted from your account

It can be quite dangerous that you have to pay money to the IRS. It will not be of any surprise if you get constant emails from cybercriminals who send you email saying that money has been deducted from your account.

If you want to ensure if the email is real or fake, you need to read it out properly. A fake email would be one which would claim deduction of the tax payment and there will be a receipt in the email. If you will open the attached receipt file, you will understand that it is not a receipt but in real it is a virus which can cause a lot of problem for you.

  • You qualify and are eligible to get a refund

On one side we view the fact that the recipient owes money to the IRS, but if we take a look at the other side there is also a possibility that the IRS has to pay money to the recipient. Even though we often come across these emails, scams are no common.

If it is a fake statement, the recipient will be required to click on the link and open it. When the recipient will click on the link, it will ask the proof of identity and some other personal information as well. Other requirements include copy of the passport, credit card statement, copy of utility bills and much more. You should be alert definitely as this is nothing except a scam which can be quite dangerous for you.

Wrapping up

Although, these scams can be quite dangerous for the recipient but if taken care of, you can easily avoid them. The first thing which you need to keep in mind is that IRS never sends out emails to discuss stuff about the tax. The second thing which you should keep in mind is that an email will be fake if you are addressed by the words, sir, madam etc.

Make sure that you do not click on any links because they can be a virus easily. You should also be very careful not to reply to or spill out secret information related to your bank accounts, personal information or give away important document information.
