What Happens If An Amended Tax Return Is Rejected?

An amended tax return is a returned filed to either claim a more advantageous tax filing, or make corrections to a tax return from a previous year. The IRS is at liberty to reject your amended tax returns if they think it contains errors, and they’ll keep on doing this till you correct all the mistakes. If the IRS rejects your amended return, it shouldn’t necessarily be an immediate source of worry, what you should do is to check for why IRS keeps sending it back for correction and submit a corrected return as soon as possible. 

Your filing status is not complete until IRS accepts your return. Although the process of filing your tax returns can be tedious and complicated, you should take time to fill in every detail. Paying attention to those seemingly small details can make the difference between a rejected and an accepted tax return. IRS corrects math errors, as such, they will hardly reject your tax returns because of that.  

Correct any mistake and file again

When your e-filed amended tax returns get rejected, you should get a message from IRS within 24 hours telling you why the e-filed amended tax return was rejected.  

If you have a company that files your return for you, they should either notify you of rejection within a day or correct the mistake on your behalf. 

If you amended tax return was rejected for the reasons below, you might be able to e-file an amended return. 

  • You misspelt a name.
  • A payer’s identification number is not correct.
  • Your Taxpayer’s Identification Number or Social Security number (SSN) does not match the taxpayer’s name. 
  • A form is missing on your return. 

Check through to ensure that all your info’s are correct. If you want to e-file an amended return, find a tax preparer to help you check through before filing it electronically. 

Snail mail or e-file?

Not all corrected return can be returned via an e-file for example, if it is a case of stolen identity like someone else using your Social security number (SSN), your dependent’s SSN or your spouse SSN illegally, you may have to print your return and send it via snail mail, if you send it through e-file, it would most likely be rejected. If it requires any modification, or it needs an additional supporting document, you will be contacted by mail. 

You have up to 10 days after IRS gives you notification that the return cannot be processed or collected to get it back to IRS. 

A fraudulent return was filed with your SSN

The two most popular reasons why IRS rejects tax returns are tax fraud and identity theft. Your tax return could get rejected if someone steals your SSN and fraudulently claim a refund. When this happens, you should print your tax return and fill it with the form 14039 Identity theft affidavit. You should read IRS’s policy on identity theft to know the recommended procedure and how to prevent against such occurrence in the future. If you don’t follow the laid down procedure for reporting identity theft, you’ll continue to get a rejection. monitor your TransUnion and Equifax report by keeping an eye on your credit card report. 

While submitting your amended tax returns online, you are required to provide a personal identification number and verify your adjusted gross income for last year when filing an electronic tax return. When you submit your return online, your PIN will substitute for your signature. IRS will reject your amended tax returns if you enter the wrong PIN. The exact amount must also be filled into the space meant for adjusted gross income from last year’s return. 

Note: If your return was rejected because IRS thinks a return was already filed with your SSN, then it might be an indication that someone has stolen your identity, and fraud is being perpetuated with your name. 

Whenever you get a rejection on your amended tax return, it’s a sign that you’ve got it wrong somewhere. If after filing as described in this article, you still get a rejection, then you should Find a Tax preparer, or consult the services of an Accountant.
