IRS Budget Update: Tough Choices
On Tuesday January 13, the IRS Commissioner sent an email to his employees discussing the IRS budget for 2015. It stated in the email that, the IRS will "have no choice but to do less with less". The email listed the following as examples as what the budget cuts mean this year:
- Delays in critical IT investments of more than $200 million
- Enforcement cuts of more than $160 million
- Cuts in overtime and temporary staff hours by more than $180 million
- Extending the hiring freeze through 2015
The bigest concerns to tax preparers is that the IRS anticipates an even lower level of telephone service than before, which raises the real possibility that fewer than half of taxpayers trying to call the IRS will actually reach the IRS.
This is a very good reason why you should have a good tax professional to prepare your tax returns. Tax preparers such as myself can answer and have access to various knowledge forums that an individual does not. John Cahill at Performing Financial Services and his staff stand ready to help you navigate the merky waters of the very complex IRS rules and regulations.
